Protecting stored items from Cyprus summer heat and humidity
By StoreBox.cy · · 5 min read
Long, hot summers and humid coastal air are the two things to plan for when storing in Paphos. Neither is a problem if you pack with them in mind. These are the habits that make the biggest difference.
Start dry, stay dry
Moisture that goes into storage stays there. Make sure fridges and freezers are defrosted and dried with the doors propped open, washing machines are drained, and anything cleaned on moving day has fully dried before it is loaded.
Let air move
Condensation forms where air is still. Keep boxes and furniture a few centimetres away from the container walls, stand items on pallets rather than directly on the floor, and avoid sealing furniture in plastic — breathable covers or old sheets are better.
- Pallets or slats under the first layer of boxes.
- A small gap between stacks and walls.
- Moisture absorbers, refreshed every few months in summer.
Treat sensitive items separately
Electronics, photographs, documents and leather are the most sensitive to heat and humidity. Pack them in sturdy boxes with silica gel sachets, keep them off the floor and away from the door, and consider keeping irreplaceable photos and papers at home instead.
Check in after the hottest months
A short visit at the end of summer lets you refresh absorbers, check for any damp spots and re-stack anything that has shifted. It takes minutes and prevents most long-term storage problems.
