Resource · Moving Checklist

A calm, week-by-week move plan.

Moving is 90% preparation and 10% lifting. Follow the checklist below and by move day you'll be handing keys over, not chasing boxes.

Four weeks out

  • Confirm the completion or handover date on both properties.
  • Book a removal firm and, if there's any gap, reserve a storage container.
  • Sort belongings into: keep, donate, sell, throw.
  • Order packing supplies — new boxes, tape, bubble wrap, marker pens.

Three weeks out

  • Start with rooms you use least (spare room, loft, garage).
  • Pack out-of-season clothes and shoes.
  • Take photos of electronics and how they're wired before dismantling.
  • Notify banks, utility providers and the post office of the new address.

Two weeks out

  • Pack books, decor, non-essential kitchen items.
  • Empty the freezer and start eating down the fridge.
  • Return borrowed items, collect anything lent out.
  • Confirm the storage move-in slot and quote in writing.

One week out

  • Pack the rest of the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, leaving essentials in a suitcase.
  • Prepare an "open-first" box: kettle, mugs, tea, chargers, toiletries, toilet paper, bedding.
  • Label every box on two sides with the destination room.
  • Defrost and dry the freezer 24 hours before move day.

Move day

  • Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard and drawer.
  • Take meter readings and photograph them.
  • Carry valuables, documents and prescription medication personally.
  • Load storage first if you're storing, then head to the new property.
