Insurance for stored belongings — the short version.
Storage facilities protect your unit; insurance protects the contents. Here's how to think about cover levels without overpaying.
A quality self storage facility manages security, weather, fire risk and access. What it doesn't insure is what you store — that's on the customer, either through a specialist policy or an extension of a home policy.
How to estimate your cover
- List rooms of contents you're storing (kitchen, bedroom, garage).
- Estimate replacement value per room — what would it cost to buy new today.
- Total the rooms and add 10–15% for items you'll forget.
- Round up to the nearest standard cover band (often €5k, €10k, €15k).
Declare high-value items separately
Jewellery, art, collectibles, business equipment and antiques should be listed individually with proof of value (invoices or valuations). Standard cover often caps single-item claims.
What insurers usually exclude
- Cash, deeds and irreplaceable documents.
- Live plants, food, perishables and hazardous materials.
- Damage from vermin (if the container isn't sealed) — not an issue in steel containers.
- Wear-and-tear or pre-existing damage.
Insurance questions
Customers are responsible for insuring the items they store. We offer optional insurance through a partner, and we're happy to recommend cover levels based on the value of your goods.
